Wine and jazz: a double date – the meadow of the Munitz winery in the moonlight of Gidi Gov

Munitz Winery is a family boutique winery, established in 2018 by The brothers Sharel and Iti Munitz. The winery is located near Moshav Shekh in the Lachish region, the vineyards are scattered between Kibbutz Shumaria in the south to the Ben Zamra vineyard in the north. The winery mainly cooperates with winegrowers and less grows the grapes itself.

The winery’s vision is to create quality wines by choosing vineyards from selected regions, and leveraging Sharel’s knowledge in accompanying the winegrowers to obtain quality grapes and wines. The vineyards and vintners who work with the winery are chosen by Sheral Munitz, a doctor of plant sciences with a specialization in growing vines for wine. The division of labor between the brothers: Sharel accompanies the vine growers in the cultivation, while Itai is responsible for the marketing of the wine, with winemaking decisions being made together.

In 2022, the winery will produce about 12,000 bottles. Each year one white wine is produced – currently Vionia, and one rosé – from Grenache grapes, while until last year the rosé was from Carignan grapes. The red wines that the winery produces: two blends – willow – based on Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sycamore – based on Cabernet Franc. In addition, the Monitz winery has a series of varietal wines: Petit Verdot, Petit Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. In 2020, the winery aged six barrels of very high quality Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. One barrel was aged for another year, and from it they created a higher series called Parliament.

Arava 2020 Each of the brothers has three daughters, Arva is the middle daughter of Sharel. This wine is a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Shiloh area, 27% Petit Verdot from the Jerusalem Mountains, 3% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc from the Ben Zimara vineyard. The wine was aged for a year in new and used French barrels. It has a medium body, red fruit flavors in which cherry is especially prominent, smooth tannins, pleasant and balanced acidity. A complex and delightful wine, rich and elegant. A long and pleasant ending for more and more and more. An impressive and high-quality wine, perfect for an Israeli “winter”.

All beautiful things are truly revealed in their time. For me, it pairs wonderfully with the wine, and rolls into places and characters into the desert – to the Arabah, to Kibbutz Samar, under wonderful and romantic moonlit nights.

In 2003, Gidi Gov recorded the album ‘Moon Dance’, which contained his performances of translated songs, as well as some veterans in the jazz style. All the songs were processed and musically re-produced for the album, by Adi Rennert. Track number 8 on the album is the theme song ‘Moon Dance’ (lyrics and music: Van Morrison, translation: Ali Mohr). I chose the song in Hebrew: fun, flowing, rhythmic, pleasant, jazz, Gidi Gov clear, rough voice. A romantic on a couch with a smile on his face. The denim jacket and the heavy shoes, black and white photo. Everything is relaxed. An amazing and perfect song for a chilly winter evening.

The wine makes the moon dance happen, everything moves, sways. This song is so magical, and the wine is so delicious. There is feeling and passion for wine and music, and nothing else is important. Everyone is smiling and having fun. The wonderful song and the wine dance in the moonlight. Thank you moon! As the saying goes: ‘The moon is the lamp of the night’. A wonderful duet.

Can’t believe that Van Morrison’s original song is 53 years old. Aging like a fine Arab wine. integrity.

Moonlight dance with wine that best suits the song. A love story between a willow and the moon.
