After two chaotic years following his title at the Tokyo Games, the seven-time American Olympic champion won the 100m butterfly at the US Open on Friday and is gaining momentum a few months before Paris 2024.

Seven-time American Olympic champion Caeleb Dressel won the 100m butterfly at the US Open on Friday in Greensboro (United States), where he hopes to begin his return to the highest level a few months before the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

After an encouraging 50m freestyle Thursday, Dressel won the 100m butterfly in 51 sec 31, a hundredth of a second ahead of Canadian Ilya Kharun.

«It’s always nice to see fast times, like yesterday (Thursday) and tonight. It’s just fun to be back. I’m halfway there, but I feel like I’m on schedule», Commented the swimmer.

«Training is going well, this victory is the icing on the cake», added Dressel, powerful at the end of the race in the 100m butterfly while he was only 6th in the 50m.

Two chaotic years

His time today remains very far from his own world record (49.45 in Tokyo in 2021), but is a new sign of progress for the 27-year-old American who experienced two chaotic years after his triumph at the Tokyo Games in 2021 .

Between breaks of several months outside the pools, he withdrew from the World Championships in Budapest in 2022 before failing to qualify for those in Fukuoka this summer.

Dressel, who will be competing in the 100m freestyle at the US Open on Saturday, will have to go through the Trials scheduled in Indianapolis from June 15 to 23 like his compatriots to hope to compete in the Olympics.

In Greensboro (North Carolina), Canadian Summer McIntosh easily won the 400m medley in 4 min 29 sec 96.

Already dominated the day before by McIntosh in the 400m freestyle, American star Katie Ledecky once again finished 2nd in the 200m freestyle (1:56.29), well ahead of Hong Kong swimmer Siobhan Haughey (1:54.20).
