First solo mini album ‘My Type’ released on the 15th
Lee Seung Hoon of group ‘WINNER’, which celebrates its 10th debut anniversary this year, will release his first solo mini album ‘My Type’ on the 15th at 6 PM.
Lee Seung Hoon produced all the songs in this album, which are filled with his own personality and taste. The title song, “Just My Style,” is easy listening. It features a funky old-school rhythm and witty lyrics.
On the 14th, a day before the album’s release, Lee Seung Hoon said through his agency YG Entertainment, “I tried my best to capture myself as unadorned as possible. I prepared it with a story that anyone can relate to and music that is comfortable and familiar. It’s a great album to listen to in the summer, so I hope everyone enjoys it.”
Lee Seung Hoon said that he got the hint from the title of the album, “It’s just my style.” He said that the intuitive and simple image that the words “my type” give off matches his personality in many ways, so he thought he could express it well.
Lee Seung Hoon introduced it by saying, “Once the album keywords were set like that, the direction became clearer. Since it is an album that talks about my tastes, I had a strong desire to produce it myself. It is my first solo album that contains all of me.”
He said that while making the album, he thought that ‘gaining sympathy from the public’ and ‘singing with sincerity and fun’ were the most important things.
Lee Seung Hoon said, “Honesty is my weapon, and I wanted to create a sense of empathy with the public by telling the story of ‘Lee Seung Hoon the human’ rather than ‘Lee Seung Hoon the artist.’ I put stories in the songs that anyone can relate to, saying, ‘This is my story?!'” He explained, “I also filmed the album jacket in my actual everyday living space, not on a set, in order to capture the ‘natural Lee Seung Hoon’ that is most like me.”
He said that the title ‘It’s Just My Style’ gave him the confidence and assurance to project himself and express himself authentically and enjoy the stage. He added that he was satisfied with the result thanks to his fellow Winner Song Mino’s help in thinking things through and giving him advice.
If the title track is a fastball, the other tracks are changeups. ‘Thinkin’ Bad Things’ is a song that puts the most effort into the vocal part that can show a wide range of vocals with various tones. ‘Do Re Mi Fa Sol’ has a cute, bouncy melody line and lyrics. ‘BROTHER & SISTER’ is a song that contains Lee Seung Hoon’s energy.
Lee Seung Hoon said, “We prepared for a long time, so we ended up with around 40 demo songs. Among them, we selected songs that had the strengths of a solo artist who could show off singing, rapping, and dancing,” and added, “We tried many different concepts and music genres.”
Lee Seung Hoon is also Winner’s main dancer. This time, he paid attention to the details of the performance in order to show a stage composition that was not there before.
He said, “I incorporated old school punk that influenced me when I was young. I also added Lee Seung Hoon’s own seasoning to patterns that could have been monotonous. I put a lot of effort into making the sections with dancers and the dance breaks in the middle feel fresh.” “There are a lot of powerful moves, but there are also easy-to-follow point choreography. I also incorporated the ‘pistol dance,’ which is YG’s surefire dance strategy, to bring out the point of the chorus, ‘It’s just my style,’” he joked.
The Winner members also cheered me on. “They are the members who have watched me grow and change, so they know the most about the musical direction I want to take, so they monitored me from time to time, thought about the parts I was worried about, and gave me advice.”
The ‘That’s My Style’ story film featured guest appearances by Kian84, Lee Si-eon, and Pani Bottle. They are the people who met Lee Seung-hoon through a TV program and became close to him on a personal level.
Lee Seung Hoon said, “Thanks to everyone who listened to my demo song, gave me suggestions for ideas, and even helped me out with appearing in the story film, I was able to come up with an interesting result.” He continued, “I thought a lot about the promotional strategy, but I thought it would be nice if many people could easily approach it and enjoy it. I was very serious when making music, but I tried to convey it in a more friendly way.”
For this album, Seunghoon Lee went to the office every day and took charge of not only the music, but also planning, ideation, editing, visuals, styling, and even casting.
Lee Seung Hoon said, “It was very rewarding. I think I learned and gained a lot while producing this album,” and emphasized, “It’s great to shine on stage, but I also want to refine my producer Lee Seung Hoon’s good sense and sharpness. My ultimate goal is to become someone who can have a positive influence on many artists.”
