Meet the Winners of the ECOaprendiendo por el Motagua 2024 contestan initiative that promotes environmental education in Guatemala. How cool! In its second editionthe recovery of thousands of wastes was achieved, preventing contaminate the Motagua River.
Winners of the ECOaprendiendo por el Motagua 2024 contest
MakingEcho and the Alliance for the Motagua Basin They have organized the Children’s competition Learning for MotaguaThrough this, teachers from various schools are motivated to organize activities that involve children, their families and the community in initiatives that positively impact the environment.
This year, one hundred and forty educational centers located throughout the Motagua Basin signed up, allowing students to learn about the correct way to manage waste from home and promoting good practices such as classifying, reducing, recycling and composting. In addition, 450 teachers were trained for two months, impacting more than 33 thousand girls, boys and young people in the country with environmental education.
Learning and helping the planet: more than 15 thousand pounds of waste were recovered
To earn points, participants had to complete ECOreto 21 activities. These led students and teachers to participate in clean-up days, children’s reforestation, celebration of International Recycling Day and Earth Day, sorting waste from home and collecting it at educational centers.
Institutions that met all the challenges moved on to level 2, where other environmental education tools were provided. Institutions such as MayanToons by Flaar, EPIC Academy of the Ocean Legacy Foundation, Por Un Mundo Limpio como el Vidrio by Vical, Guardianes Ecológicos by MARN and Compostaje participated in this process.
These activities allowed the recovery of 3,827 pounds of PET plastic bottles, 3,463 pounds of cardboard and paper, 3,535 pounds of glass, 859 pounds of tetrapack, 3,802 pounds of aluminum and 1,102 units of eco-bricks.

First places: These are the winners of a complete computer lab:
- Institute for the Maya Canoense Cooperative, Las Canoas Village, San Andrés Semetabaj Municipality, Sololá.
- Official Rural Mixed School of El Plan Village in the municipality of Morazán, El Progreso.
- National Institute of Basic Education Morning Session with Agricultural Orientation INEBOA of the municipality of Estanzuela, Zacapa.
- National Institute of Basic Education Night Shift of the municipality of Estanzuela, Zacapa.
Second places: The schools that obtained second place won a set of recycled plastic wood swings.
- My First Traces of the Municipality of Antigua Guatemala, Sacatepéquez.
- Official Rural Mixed School of La Tejera Village in the municipality of Chuarrancho, Guatemala.
- Official Urban Mixed School Residential Valley of the municipality of Esquipulas, Chiquimula.
Third places: The winners received a laptop to facilitate digital processes in teaching:
- Basic Education Institute by Teaching Cooperative of the municipality of Pachalum, El Quiché.
- Villa de los Niños School: Zone 6, of the municipality of Guatemala, Guatemala.
- Maria Albertina Salguero Bracamonte Official Urban Mixed School of the municipality of Chiquimula, Chiquimula.
Fourth places: These educational centers obtained two ecofilters and a kitchen kit for the teachers’ lounge:
- David Vela Official Rural Mixed School, Xesuj Village of the municipality of San Martín Jilotepeque, Chimaltenango.
- Azteca Guatemala Campus, from the municipality of Guatemala.
- Maria Moscoso Espino Official Urban Mixed School of the municipality of San Jose La Arada, Chiquimula.
Fifth places: The winners won two ecofilters:
- The school is located in the municipality of Santa Cruz del Quiché, El Quiché.
- Official Mixed Institute of Basic Education of Chinautla, Guatemala.
- National Institute of Diversified Education Evening Session of the municipality of Estanzuela, Zacapa.
