Kolkata: India won the first ODI against Sri Lanka by 67 runs. Former opener Wasim Jaffer gives a warning to Team India despite the impressive win. Jaffer’s argument is that the Indian batsman should try batting experiments in such a way as to score more runs. Jaffer says four bowlers who can’t bat much is a concern.

Wasim Jaffer’s words…

“Muhammad Shami batting at number eight is a concern for me. India scored 370 runs but Shami and Siraj combined for just 17 runs in the last three overs. This is a matter to consider. Especially when there are situations where early wickets fall in the chase stages and 8-10 runs are needed on an average in an over. If Shami is the eighth man, how can India chase the score in such circumstances? With the addition of two specialist pacers and Hardik Pandya as a pace all-rounder, it should be checked whether all-rounders Washington Sundar or Shardul Thakur can be fielded. There are currently no batters after number 7. The three pacers who can bowl at a speed of over 140 kmph are an asset to the team from a bowling point of view. The team also has a leg-spinner. But it is a concern that four bowlers have no batting side,” Jaffer told ESPNcricinfo.

It was thought that India would score 400 runs in the first ODI against Sri Lanka in Guwahati. But in the last three overs when Mohammad Shami and Mohammad Siraj batted, they scored only 17 runs. With this, India were limited to 373 for seven wickets in 50 overs. In the top order, captain Rohit Sharma 83 off 67 balls, fellow opener Shubman Gill 70 off 60 balls and number three Virat Kohli shone with 113 off 87 balls. India won the match by 67 runs as Sri Lanka’s reply was limited to 306 runs for eight wickets in 50 overs. The second ODI of the three-match series will be played in Kolkata tomorrow. India can win the series if they win.
