The film ‘Winter is Coming’ will be premiered internationally on August 9 as part of the 76th edition of the Locarno (Switzerland) Film Festival. After passing through the industrial sections of some film festivals in Barcelona, Tarragona, Gijon or Palma, the works of the Winter Collective will make the jump and compete in the ‘Current Filmmakers’ section of the Swiss city’s film festival, in the section that offers the first and second films of emerging filmmakers.

The work dealing with isolation, waiting and the longing for eternal identity is ‘Winter close’, and it tells the story of an escape. The filming took place in the village of Zubieta in Navarre, and some of its residents are members of the cast, such as Beñardo Mutuberria, Ana Hualde, Markos Juanikorena, Ibai Juanikorena and Bautista Santesteban. Jone Laspiur is the protagonist, the only professional actor who participated in the film.

As the director explained, ‘Winter is coming’ takes place in 2010 and tells the story of a girl’s escape. The film starring Jone Laspiur is dark, slow, and the rest of the actors are not protagonists, they are citizens of Zubieta. “There is a script, but also a lot of improvisation,” he explained.

The short film is a production of the Negu Kolektivo made up of Ekain Albite, Mikel Ibarguren, Nicolau Mallofré and Adriá Roca and it was produced by Maluta* Films (Basque Country) and Cornelius Films (Catalonia). It is the collective’s first fictional feature film, they previously presented the project ‘Erroitz’, filmed in the Basque Country, and a year later came ‘Laiotz’, a half-length film shot in 16 mm.

With more complicity, experience and resources, they decided to expand the collective and include new members from the field of cinema, as well as other professionals outside the academic environment. Now, that the team is stronger than ever, they admit that they will “continue to unite their spirit and passion, to continue creating projects that speak of the complexity and authenticity of life”.
