Checklist

Do you want to prepare your home for winter? The most important points at a glance:

locationWhat to doDoorsClose as many doors as possible so that the heat stays in the roomsWindows- Check the seals on the windows and replace them if necessary – Ventilate properly: Ventilate at least once a day with the windows closed Heating- Choose the right temperature setting- Insulate the radiator nicheInsulate the bed and Change the couch- duvet- cozy blankets and pillows in the wardrobe- make space and put away summer clothes

close the door

Open doors allow warm air to escape into the usually cold hallway, causing heat to be lost. This can also encourage mold growth, so it is recommended to close doors. If you live in a house, you should also pay attention to cellar and attic doors.

Seal windows

Of course, warm air can also escape through windows. Therefore, you should check before winter whether these are really tight.

This is easy to do with a match held in front of the window slits (with the windows closed). If the flame flickers or even goes out, drafts come through the slots. Newer windows often have a winter mode, otherwise it helps to replace the seal.

Curtains can also help prevent the heat from escaping. The curtains or drapes should be drawn, especially in the evening or at night.

Ventilate properly

Yes, even when it’s cold in winter, you still need to ventilate properly. In winter, many people tend to tilt the window and not open it properly. Warm air escapes through tilted windows and mold can form as the walls cool down.

You should therefore ventilate the room a few times a day by turning off the heating and opening the window completely for a few minutes.

Heat properly

All of the tips mentioned above only help if the heating is set correctly. It is important that the heating is switched to winter mode when temperatures drop.

The correct degree of heating varies from apartment to apartment. These temperatures are recommended for your different rooms:

Living room: 20 – 22 degreesBedroom, kitchen and hallway: 15 – 18 degreesBathroom: 20 – 23 degrees

Either you heat with adjustable thermostats and can therefore set the exact temperature or you set the desired level on your heating:

Step 1: approx. 12 °CStufe 2: approx. 16 °CStufe 3: approx. 20 °CStuff 4: approx. 24 °C

Danger! Shock heating at the highest level does not make sense and is not cost-saving. It is best for your home and your wallet if you keep the heating on a low level continuously. If you want it to be a little warmer, turn the heating up higher during your stay – but don’t turn it off afterwards.

Bed and couch

Many people’s favorite place is the bed. That’s why it’s important to make this place comfortable.

If you have separate summer and winter blankets, you should replace them before the onset of winter or buy an all-season blanket. With a thick, cozy blanket you can avoid having to heat the room all night long. This is also a perfect opportunity for the annual washing of blankets and pillows.

And the couch can now also tolerate cozy blankets: cuddly blankets and pillows are ideal on the couch to make yourself as comfortable as possible. If you want that certain extra something, you can of course also attach a string of lights to create a romantic environment.

Make space in the closet

The cold season also brings advantages. The onset of winter is the perfect opportunity to reorganize your wardrobe. Many people know it: the drawers almost burst and the clothes rail bends because there are too many clothes hanging on it. Attention everyone who knows this problem:

To create more space and clutter, you can swap your summer wardrobe with winter clothes. All you have to do is store the clothes you don’t need in a dry place. Places that are suitable for this: Under the bed, in a box on the closet or in the basement.

For extra comfort

In order to feel particularly comfortable in the winter months, it is worth bringing some coziness into your own four walls. The following tips can be helpful:

Attach light sources: This can include candles, motif lamps, LED lights or fairy lights. Candles not only warm you, but also create a romantic ambience.Prepare the bathtub: In winter, many people long for a nice, hot bath. Get not only candles, but also bath salts and enjoy some time for yourself. Tea, cozy socks and hot water bottles: Relax on the couch? Chilblains in particular need a little extra warmth. You should always have delicious tea, cozy socks and a hot water bottle available at home!
