Winter Skincare: Protect Your Moisture Barrier in Cold Weather

by Grace Chen

The weather today, Sunday, will be cold as the rain that continued until the previous day has stopped and the morning temperature has dropped significantly. In most parts of the country, strong winds will blow and icy roads and roads will have light ice in some places.

The Korea Meteorological Administration predicted, “It will be mostly clear in the metropolitan area and Gangwon-do due to the edge of high pressure moving east, but the rest of the country will have a lot of clouds and gradually clear up from late afternoon.”

In particular, as cold air comes down from the northwest starting at night, the morning temperature will be about 5 to 10 degrees lower than that day, especially in the central region and Jeolla region, and the wind will be strong, making the perceived temperature even lower.

The lowest morning temperature is forecast to be -6 to 5 degrees, and the highest daytime temperature is forecast to be 0 to 8 degrees. Temperatures will be similar to or slightly lower than normal for the time being (minimum morning temperature -9 to 2 degrees, maximum daytime temperature 3 to 10 degrees).

The lowest morning temperatures in major regions are Seoul -3 degrees, Incheon -3 degrees, Suwon -3 degrees, Chuncheon -5 degrees, Gangneung 1 degrees, Cheongju -1 degrees, Daejeon -2 degrees, Jeonju 1 degrees, Gwangju 2 degrees, Daegu 1 degrees, Busan 5 degrees, and Jeju 7 degrees.

The highest daytime temperature is 2 degrees in Seoul, 1 degree in Incheon, 2 degrees in Suwon, 3 degrees in Chuncheon, 7 degrees in Gangneung, 3 degrees in Cheongju, 5 degrees in Daejeon, 5 degrees in Jeonju, 5 degrees in Gwangju, 5 degrees in Daegu, 8 degrees in Busan, and 9 degrees in Jeju.

Fine dust concentration is expected to be at a ‘good’ to ‘average’ level in all regions. However, Gangwon, Yeongseo, Chungbuk, Jeonnam, and Jeju areas are expected to be at the ‘bad’ level temporarily in the early morning, Daegu and Gyeongbuk until dawn, and Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam until morning.

Meanwhile, in winter, the skin barrier weakens due to cold wind and heating, and the moisture remaining on the skin quickly evaporates immediately after washing the face, making the barrier more vulnerable.

The dermatology guide emphasizes the three minutes after washing your face, one of which is ‘golden time’. ‘How you use this one minute’ is the key to determining the success or failure of porcelain skin in the winter.

In order to protect the moisture barrier in winter, the key is to gently wash your face with lukewarm water instead of hot water, which strips away the skin’s oil film. Additionally, you should briefly wash your face with a mildly acidic cleanser and apply a layer of moisture and moisturizing products within 3 minutes immediately after washing your face.

It is also important to manage the external environment by avoiding cold and hot water, avoiding scrubbing, and using a humidifier, and products containing ceramide and hyaluronic acid help strengthen the skin barrier.
