‘Winter Sonata’, which led the Korean Wave, will be released in Japanese next year… Reborn in 4K

The drama ‘Winter Sonata‘, which led the Korean Wave craze in the 2000s, is being reborn as a theatrical film in Japan.

Pan Entertainment, the production company of Winter Sonata, said on the 7th, “To mark the 20th anniversary of its screening in Japan, we have decided to make it into a movie after receiving continuous requests from Japanese distributors and viewers,” and said that editing work is in progress with the goal of a winter release in 2025.

Since the original was aired in 2002, it has been the most popular Korean drama in Japan, beating out prominent domestic dramas such as ‘Squid Game’, so expectations are already high for the film adaptation of Winter Sonata.

In particular, director Yoon Seok-ho, the original director, participates in all processes of producing this film. In addition, director Yoon and music director Lee Ji-soo, who collaborated on not only Winter Sonata but also the film ‘La Traviata at the End of Summer’, continue the sentiment of the original work.

This year, the film version of Winter Sonata will be screened in 4K, improved from the original quality. In addition to achieving theater quality, color correction is performed to add specialness. We also plan to arrange and re-record the existing drama’s OST into an orchestral version.

Winter Sonata, which aired on KBS 2TV from January to March 2002, is a Korean drama starring Choi Ji-woo and Bae Yong-joon. The following year, it was broadcast on Japan’s NHK under the title ‘Winter Sonata’ (冬のソナタ) and gained great popularity. At that time, it led the Korean Wave craze in Japan and became the beginning of the Korean Wave.
