(ANSA) – MANAUS, 01 SEPTEMBER – The Brazilian state of Amazonas, whose capital Manaus continues to battle with smoke, has recorded its worst August ever since the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) began monitoring fires in 1998. The BD Queimadas (Fires in Italian) program of the Inpe has in fact recorded 10,328 fires between August 1 and 31. According to photographs taken by the European satellite Copernicus, the area covered by fire is almost 500 kilometers long, in the state of Amazonas alone, which has also recorded fires in the states of Acre, Rondônia, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul and Pará, whose capital Belém will host CoP30 (the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change) next year. The government of the state of Amazonas has declared an environmental emergency in all of its 62 states, starting with Manaus. The previous record was set in August 2021, when the state that is home to much of the world’s green lung recorded around 8,500 fires. (ANSA).
