Practical and innovative solutions for the reversal of desertification and the development course of mountainous areas have been “produced” for the last 15 years by the postgraduate program “Environment and Development of Mountainous Areas” of the National Technical University of Metsov and the Metsov Center for Interdisciplinary Research, through the work of graduate students.
After a series of corresponding presentations and editions, on Saturday the proposals and ideas of the students of the DPMS were presented for the Municipality of Dodoni, with the “heavy” name of the Ancient Theater of Dodoni, but also a declining population trend in recent decades.
Nevertheless, beyond the archaeological site, the Municipality of Dodoni “hides many diamonds”, as the Director of the MEKDE, Professor Dimitris Kaliambakos, said, stressing, in his statements, the need for the state to plan and implement strategies for the development of mountainous areas, which have nothing to envy those of other countries.
The problems of accessibility, but also the lack of infrastructure, are part of a vicious circle that does not allow to easily attract new people who will be active there, so that they themselves give the development perspective required.
Thus, the proposals of the postgraduate students of MEKDE focused on the residents of the area, who love and worry about their place, offering them an opportunity to see tangible prospects for development.
The proposals, which have been published in the volume “The contribution of MEKDE to the development of the Municipality of Dodoni”, as has been done in the rest of the municipalities of Epirus and other regions, were delivered to the municipal authority and to all the residents, with Mayor Christos Dakaletsis to thank the students for their suggestions.
Particular emphasis was placed on education and the revitalization of schools, but also on strengthening social cohesion, as stated by the Director of the DPMS, Professor Efi Dimopoulou.
Among other things, the students elaborated proposals on how to make a mountain school truly special, but also proposals for soft tourism development through cycling routes, an ecological caravan park, but also the productive reconstruction of the primary sector, such as livestock and fish farming.
