DECRYPTION – The preferred savings product of the French benefits from its many qualities, but its rate of return remains lower than inflation.

«Do you want to grow your savings securely and without paying tax? You can open an A booklet“. This is how the official site of the French administration presents this investment, the interest rate of which is set by the State, taking inflation into account. An advertisement that seems to have seduced the French, who deposited nearly 26 billion on this savings product in the first six months of 2023. Unheard of since this placement was generalized to all banks in 2009, and enough to bring the total outstanding beyond the 400 billion euro mark in June.

But is the livret A still interesting, while the Minister of Economy and Finance, Bruno Le Maire, recently made the choice to maintain his rate of pay at 3% on August 1, and this, ignoring inflation? This somewhat disappointing decision for the more than 80% of French people to hold a livret A – who nevertheless have the assurance of benefiting from a fixed rate until 2025 – calls into question the interest of depositing money on this product?
