Left alliance
Written by Rainer Ackermann
“If the majority of voters vote against the Orbán government on June 9th, then we want new elections.” With this declaration of war, Klára Dobrev officially opened the left-wing alliance’s election campaign for the European and local elections on Sunday evening.
The DK’s top candidate for the European elections confirmed at the joint event with MSZP and Párbeszéd in the Budapest Congress Center that the voters would make a judgment about the government and the Prime Minister on June 9th. If Fidesz loses the election, the left “will not rest until we drive them out of office.” The wife of ex-Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány wants more than just a change of government, the “whole Orbán system must be replaced”. The left-wing alliance brings with it the resources and skills to lead the country and create a “European Hungary worth living in”. Dobrev called on “all democrats” to seek compromise in order to dismantle the Orbán system in a coalition.
If she wins, Klára Dobrev wants new elections on June 9th to replace the Orbán government.
For a “European Hungary”
Budapest mayor Gergely Karácsony asked voters to plead for “free” cities and municipalities and for a “European Hungary” on June 9th. Cities like Budapest run by the opposition are now like bridgeheads that will serve as a base to reconquer the entire country in the next few years. “Budapest is a republic and will remain so. The capital can only thrive if it is free.”
His deputy in Budapest City Hall, Kata Tüttő from the Socialists, sees a viable left-green alternative for municipalities based on the capital’s model. Now they also want to show Hungary an alternative direction. The MSZP did not enter into a marriage with DK and Párbeszéd to find happiness in life, but rather an alliance to replace the government.
Progressives against hostages
EU Commissioner Nicolas Schmit, the top candidate of the European Social Democrats (PES), spoke of the highest commitment ever in the upcoming European elections. “Citizens have the choice between a right-wing Europe held hostage by the right-wing radicals and a progressive Europe led by the Social Democrats,” said the Luxembourg politician, who is challenging incumbent Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
