Today, Sunday, the Saudi capital, Riyadh, is hosting an international meeting to discuss developments in the Syrian scene, with broad participation from regional and international countries, in order to continue the path of the “Aqaba Meeting,” which aims to help the Syrian people at this stage. On Saturday evening, the arrival of participants in the meeting began.
The Riyadh meeting aims to provide assistance to Syria at this stage, by supporting the political process for a Syrian-Syrian transitional stage, inclusive of all sects that represent the political and social forces in Syria. Also, solidarity with Syria in preserving its unity, territorial integrity, sovereignty, and the safety of its citizens.
The meeting, which witnesses the presence of representatives from the new Syrian administration and about 17 countries, representing the Gulf Cooperation Council countries and the Arab Ministerial Liaison Committee on Syria, which includes Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraq, in addition to the participation of the United States, France, Turkey, and the United Kingdom, will discuss Spain, Italy, and Germany discussed the situation in Syria after the fall of the Assad regime last month.
Media sources reported that the UN envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, and Kaya Kallas, the High Commissioner for Foreign and Security Policy in the European Union, will attend the meeting.
Arab foreign ministers are meeting to discuss the situation in Syria, before an expanded meeting that includes their European counterparts and representatives of participating organizations, according to the same sources.
The Riyadh meeting comes after a meeting hosted by the Jordanian city of Aqaba in the middle of last month, during which the “Ministerial Liaison Committee on Syria” affirmed standing by the Syrian people in this historical stage to rebuild their homeland on the foundations that preserve its security, stability, sovereignty and unity, and fulfill the rights of its people to a safe life. Free, stable, dignified on his land.
The committee, formed by a decision of the League of Arab States, stressed support for an “inclusive” Syrian political transitional process, in which all political and social forces are represented, sponsored by the United Nations and the Arab League, and in accordance with the principles of Security Council Resolution No. 2254, its objectives and mechanisms.
