The ruling and opposition parties continued their battle the day after the court accepted the application for an injunction to suspend the appointment of six new directors by the Broadcast Culture Promotion Association (Bangmunjin), the largest shareholder of MBC. The People Power Party criticized the court, saying, “This is a conclusion I have neither heard nor seen,” and “If an injunction is accepted without principles, the effect of the appointment of the executive branch itself will be lost.” On the other hand, the Democratic Party of Korea welcomed the court’s decision and argued, “Let’s normalize the Korea Communications Commission and elect new public broadcasting board members.”
The People Power Party responded to the court’s decision the day before by issuing a statement of criticism from all sides, while saying, “We respect the court’s decision.” In addition to public statements at the floor strategy meeting, ruling party members of the party’s media special committee and the National Assembly Science, Technology, Information, Broadcasting and Communications Committee each distributed statements and press releases, and the spokesperson also issued comments twice.
The People Power Party’s National Defense Commission members claimed at a press conference that “the court’s decision was an unheard-of conclusion that ‘it is okay to sacrifice the interests of new directors starting their terms in order to protect the interests of directors whose terms have expired'” and that “it is an extension of the Democratic Party’s obsession over the past three months with ‘indefinitely extending the terms of director Bang Moon-jin whose terms have expired’.” The ruling party also argued, “Why are you not respecting the fact that the Seoul High Court, the higher court, recognized the legitimacy of the two-member KCC system?” and “Why are you not holding the Democratic Party responsible for bringing about the two-member system?”
Rep. Choi Hyung-doo, the floor leader of the ruling party’s Defense Committee, criticized the committee during a floor strategy meeting held that day, saying, “This is a time when we need to focus on artificial intelligence policies and advanced technology research and development, but the three-month-long battle over the appointment of MBC’s board of directors has ultimately brought the National Assembly’s Defense Committee to the brink of collapse.”
On the other hand, Democratic Party floor leader Park Chan-dae said at a floor strategy meeting that day, “This is an extremely common-sense and reasonable judgment by the court regarding the illegality of the two-person system and the procedural defects in the process of appointing directors,” and “I hope this will be an opportunity to break the vicious cycle of the Yoon Seok-yeol administration’s suppression of freedom of the press and control of broadcasting.”
The Democratic Party attacked the KCC at the plenary session of the National Assembly’s Defense and Security Committee that day, saying, “It has been proven that the KCC (appointment of Director Bang Moon-jin) resolution was a mess.” Democratic Party lawmaker Noh Jong-myeon said, “The Yoon Seok-yeol government went all-in on using the KCC to crack down on MBC, but the court sounded the alarm,” and emphasized, “The KCC should read the court’s decision carefully, stop spending more on litigation fees, and give up on appealing.” At the same event, lawmaker Choi Hyung-doo said, “I hope that the results of the impeachment and other court trials are decided quickly so that the restoration of the five-person system, which is the core of the problem, can be done quickly and simultaneously.”
