/ Dozens of gunmen attacked a police station in northwestern Pakistan on Monday, killing at least 10 policemen. The attack comes days before the country’s general elections, which have seen dozens of attacks on candidates and party supporters in the past few days.

Akhtar Hayat Gandapur, the police chief of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, was quoted by AFP as saying that more than 30 militants launched an attack from three directions, with an exchange of fire lasting more than 2.5 hours.

The provincial police chief said 10 policemen were killed and 4 injured in the attack on the Chodwan police station in Dera Ismail Khan.

He added that the gunmen were able to briefly control the police station during their attack, which began at around 1:30 a.m. local time. No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

Pakistan has witnessed an escalation in violence over the past few days as the general elections scheduled for next Thursday approach. The local newspaper “Dawn” reported today that unknown men riding motorcycles threw hand grenades at party election headquarters, candidate residences, and the Election Commission office in various areas of Balochistan province, which borders Iran.
