With national films or films inspired by the active life of the country, the good moment that Mexican cinema is experiencing inside and outside its borders was reflected in the first days of the Morelia Festival, Michoacán.
This Sunday, the Morelia festival gave space to works by indigenous communities, a priority of the Mexican Film Institute (Imcine), with two films, “The Stripe” y “Chicharras“. The latter tells of a community’s resistance to a project to build a highway.
However, on the first red carpet, on Friday night, the local public discovered the Frenchman’s long-awaited film Jacques Audiard“Emilia Perez“, recorded in Spanish and located largely in Mexico City.
With more than a million entries since August, this film delves into the story of a drug trafficker who regrets his criminal life after changing sex and is played by the transgender Spanish actress. Karla Sofia Gascón.

The musical mix of various genres, as usual at Audiard. Despite the expectation it has generated, there is still no date for its commercial release in Mexico.
The film has a memorable choreography by Emilia Pérez’s lawyer (Zoe Saldana), which openly denounces the alleged corruption of the Mexican elites.
Audiard’s film, which won two awards at Cannes, was selected to represent France in the Oscar of Hollywood.
“Sujo” was also presented, which will compete for Mexico at the Oscars. It is produced by Pepper Filmwhich has already been awarded in Hollywood with “Roma“, of Alfonso Cuaron.
“’Sujo’ is the story of a young drug orphan who loses his hitman father at a very young age,” explained the co-director. Astrid Rondero. The film is already distributed in France and other countries with the title “Son of Sicario” and will premiere on December 5 in the Mexican rooms.
After growing up in an area besieged by organized crime, the boy tries to change his life by seeking refuge in the capital.
“What fascinated me from the beginning was being able to talk about a child who sought to face what seemed to be an inevitable destiny,” explains the other co-director, Fernanda Valadezfor whom knowing how to say goodbye is also growing.
For the script, the two filmmakers who graduated from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAMwhere the last part of the film is located) were inspired by the books of Javier Valdezan internationally recognized journalist from Sinaloa.

A new adaptation of the novel was also presented in Morelia “Pedro Paramo“, a classic of 20th century Spanish literature by Juan Rulfo.
The trip to Eat it, imaginary town just as famous as the Macondo of Gabriel Garcia Marquezwill be released on November 6 in Netflix. The cast of the play directed by Rodrigo Prieto has the participation of Manuel García-Rulfoa relative of the writer.
