The initiative will cover 16 schools, this month and in November, with presentations by repentistas and delivery of cordel booklets

Sixteen public schools in the Federal District will receive, between October and November, the new season of the Repente na Escola project. Teaching centers in Taguatinga, Ceilândia, Santa Maria, Gama, Água Quente and Plano Piloto will benefit.

The proposal consists of the presentation of repentistas and the delivery of cordel booklets so that students can learn about and value the oral manifestation that, since 2021, has been recognized as Cultural Heritage of Brazil by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (Iphan).

The initiative is supported by the Government of the Federal District (GDF). R$ 279 thousand are being invested by the Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy (Secec) for the new edition of the project, led by the Association of Repentista Singers and Popular Writers of DF and Surroundings (Acrespo).

Secec’s Undersecretary of Diffusion and Cultural Diversity, João Cândido, explains that the project aims to promote cultural democratization, by serving the public school community. “Repente na Escola contributes to the integration of young people in the process of recognizing cultural manifestations; In fact, this artistic manifestation may be part of their origins and ancestry,” he states.

Cultural identity

The premiere of this season is scheduled for the 16th, at the Special Education Center 01 (CEE 01) in Taguatinga. “We chose this school to open to start the project, bringing culture to people with disabilities”, says the president of the association organizing the project, João Santana. “In this edition we will also have a Libras interpreter [Língua Brasileira de Sinais]”. Until November, the project will pass through public institutions in Ceilândia, Santa Maria, Gama, Água Quente and Plano Piloto.

By presenting the oral demonstration, Repente na Escola aims to maintain the cultural identity of northeastern roots among young people living in the Federal District. “Here in DF, most families have northeastern origins”, remembers Santana. “Many of these young people will be having contact for the first time with an art that was common to their parents and grandparents. We understand that it is important to pass this culture on to younger people.”

The president of Acrespo emphasizes that the initiative can only continue due to government support. “To carry out a project of this type completely free of charge for students, bringing speakers and an entire sound structure to a school environment, it is necessary to have resources”, he points out. “We wouldn’t have been able to do it without this help. It would be unfeasible.”

The style

With records in the states of Pernambuco and Paraíba since the middle of the 19th century, suddenly emerged from the interpretation of song and poetry by the troubadours. The style is known for rhyme, improvisation, meter and prayer. The repentistas usually receive the theme from the audience and create the verses on the spot.

Traditionally, the performance is performed by two singers accompanied by violas. There are more than 50 types of art registered by Iphan.
