One of the ambitions of the local prevention agreement ‘Gezond Waalre’ is to organize supermarket safaris. This safari or tour through the supermarket should make people aware of healthy and unhealthy products. In this way we encourage them to make healthy choices. Wednesday morning, June 22, the first supermarket safari was organized for visitors and supervisors of the Zonnebloem foundation from Waalre. Two groups went on safari through the Albert Heijn in Aalst.

There was a tour led by Wouter Griep (supermarket manager) and Dominique van Well-van Hemert (Etos), but also a discussion about the eating habits and nutrition of the participants with Carl van der Aalst (supermarket manager AH Waalre), Kirsten Peek (Wijk GGD’er) and Diny van der Horst (The 1on1 Diet).

Healthy food with the Nutri score

The participants exchanged ideas about healthy food. For example, it was discussed: how much and what do you actually need in terms of food per day? And advice has been shared about making healthier choices in the diet and in the supermarket. For example, you can compare the Nutri score within a product group. This score is stated on the packaging: the green A is the healthiest and the red E is the unhealthiest. This allows customers to make healthier choices in the store. At a glance you can see which variant is the healthiest choice within that product group.

Enthusiastic reactions

There were many enthusiastic reactions at the end of the morning. For example, about the tour and the conversation about healthy food, it was said: “I’ve been coming to this Albert Heijn for decades, but I’ve never seen this, very interesting!” And another lady says that it was very pleasant and that she also learned something from it. And that is the goal: to set up an educational activity in a pleasant, fun way.

With this, all partners endorse the importance of a preventive approach to a healthy lifestyle and a healthy living environment for young and old in Waalre. The joint goal is to inspire the inhabitants of Waalre to live healthy and happy lives, to make healthy choices and to keep or get moving. These supermarket safaris are part of this and are organized in collaboration with various partners for young people, their parents and the elderly.
