People Power Party lawmakers, including floor leader Choo Kyung-ho, are denouncing the Democratic Party of Korea ahead of the plenary session in front of the National Assembly Rotunda Hall in Yeouido, Seoul on the afternoon of the 1st. 2024.8.1/News 1

People Power Party floor leader Choo Kyung-ho strongly criticized the low participation of Democratic Party lawmakers in unlimited debate (filibuster) on the “250,000 won livelihood recovery support fund for all citizens” and the “yellow envelope law” (amendment to Articles 2 and 3 of the Labor Union and Labor Relations Adjustment Act). Both bills are the Democratic Party’s party bills, and the People Power Party has been expressing its opposition by defining them as the “cash scattering law” and the “illegal strike promotion law,” respectively.

On the morning of the 4th, after the filibuster on the “yellow envelope law” ended, floor leader Choo wrote on Facebook, “The Democratic Party lawmakers’ debate in favor of the two bills combined only lasted 2 hours (out of approximately 56 hours),” and “It is an insincere attitude to unilaterally pass bills that will destroy the people’s economy while avoiding debate.” He continued, “They do not have the confidence to logically persuade the people, and they do not have the desperate sincerity for the bills.”

The ruling and opposition parties previously held a filibuster for two nights and three days over two bills. On the 2nd, the Democratic Party and other opposition parties passed the ‘250,000 won livelihood recovery support fund for all citizens’ proposed by former leader Lee Jae-myung at the plenary session of the National Assembly without the ruling party’s participation, and the ‘yellow envelope law’ was then tabled. The People Power Party entered into a filibuster again, and it automatically ended at midnight on the 4th when the July extraordinary session of the National Assembly ended.

The opposition party plans to push through the “yellow envelope law” on the 5th, when the extraordinary session of the National Assembly opens in August. Floor leader Choo claimed, “The Democratic Party must also be aware of the problems,” and “The Democratic Party’s intention is to increase the number of cases in which the president can request reconsideration and use it to incite impeachment.” He also emphasized, “This kind of irresponsible impeachment politics must stop now.”

The ruling party plans to request the president to exercise his right to demand reconsideration of unilateral bills without agreement. Bae Joon-young, the People Power Party’s floor leader, said on the 3rd, “If the government neglects to exercise its right to demand reconsideration of bad laws and ruins people’s livelihoods, that is dereliction of duty,” and “(The right to demand reconsideration) is an authority granted to the president to block laws that are obviously going to be politically exploited and laws that encourage illegal activities.”

Choi Soo-jin, senior spokesperson for the People Power Party, also said in a commentary on the 4th, “From the start of the extraordinary session in July until the very end, the giant opposition party’s rampage through the National Assembly did not stop for a moment.” She asked, “If this is a bill that must be pushed through and passed by immediately opening the extraordinary session in August after the end of the session, why didn’t they handle it when they were the ruling party in power, and why are they only rampaging now?”
