With Ko Ko Mo, rock becomes electric again at La Maroquinerie

by time news

The secret was well kept, but it ended up being out, due to a growing stage reputation. Somewhere near Nantes, there was a rock band, limited to two musicians, with a bizarre name, Ko Ko Mo, giving concerts that were restless, electric, even frenetic, to say the least. An energy finally well captured on a third album, “Need Some Mo'”, released a few weeks ago. Since then, it’s been a snowball effect: laudatory chronicles of the disc, and shows that fill up, even display full, like this Parisian Leather Goods, on this Saturday evening.

A room already well prepared by the formation of first part, the Americans of Grizzled Mighty. A trio from Seattle, purveyors of high-energy rock, sometimes blues rock, at other times rather indie, which warms up the room properly for 45 minutes. Half an hour later, it’s the turn of Warren Mutton, guitarist and singer, and Kevin “K20” Grosmolard, drummer, to go up on a bare stage, the instrument of “K20”, minimalist, being moreover disposed diagonally, so that the two musicians can see each other at all times. Finally, one can imagine it, because the duo does not hold in place. Warren, in a plaid jacket, is constantly shaking his head and jumping around, while his friend is struggling to stay seated.

The people of Nantes are making massive use of their latest album tonight, three quarters of which are played on stage, including the long “Non essential Man” opening the show. Impressive to see how Warren, in addition to his permanent gesticulation, also manages to sing often in falsetto, reaching notes that remind us of the British of the Darkness, or further, the sequined glam of T-Rex.

From glam to disco, there is only one step, which Ko Ko Mo crosses cheerfully, taking up in his own way the hit “Last Night a DJ saved my life”, to transform it into a great shamanic mass, to which the public Communion without being asked, in particular by clapping their hands rhythmically. Otherwise, it’s electric rock on all levels, with the closing point “Idiocracy Song”, whose title “K20” announces “summarizes the past ten years well”…

Except that it is in acoustics that the duo returns in recall, after an hour, moving a piece of drums in the middle of the crowd, making the spectators sit down, just to deliver a “Hard Time” a little more intimate. . But the natural takes over, and Ko Ko Mo puts his fingers back in the grip to unleash a few last titles, including the shaken goods “So down” and “Self Love Age”.
