Winemaker of the Year

Written by Rainer Ackermann

Tamás Günzer is Winemaker of the Year 2023. He won the Wine Academy competition as a representative of the Villány wine-growing region in southern Hungary.

Among wine connoisseurs, winning the Wine Academy (MBA) competition is considered the highest domestic recognition. This is not about appreciating an outstanding wine, but rather about the consistently high quality of the wine cellar in question, demonstrated over many years. The family business, led by Tamás Günzer, cultivates 75 hectares and produces around 5,000 hectoliters of wine per year.

The successful winemaker received his first “vineyard” in recognition of his university degree as an agricultural engineer for animal breeding. His first wine won a gold medal at the Villány wine competition in 1991. Today, wines from Tamás Günzer are not only known to gourmets in this country, many bottles are also exported, whether to Switzerland or Poland. Its Bocor Grandior Merlot is a special flagship, but the cellar also scores points with wine lovers with its Chardonnay and various cuvées.

The Villány wine-growing region experienced its heyday in the 1990s, when Ede Tiffán, Attila Gere, Zoltán Polgár and József Bock were named “Winemaker of the Year” within a few years of each other. This year was Tamás Günzer’s third nomination before he was also awarded the title.
