A year and a half before the Olympic Games, significant changes have taken place in the Latvian bobsleigh team. Dāvis Springis and Krists Lindenblats, the pushers of the leading crew of four, announced their retirement from bobsleigh, and then also the first pilot, Emils Cipulis.
In Ventspils, the bobsledders have started the second training camp with twelve athletes, preparing for the 2024/2025 season. for the season of the year. The Latvian team is left with one pilot, Jēkabs Kalendas, who only started his career in bobsleigh three years ago and who does not yet have four years of experience in the most important competitions. The head coach of the Latvian national team, Sandis Prūsis, admits that it is practically impossible to prepare another pilot for the start at the highest level in such a short period of time. “If strong athletes suddenly appear who are ready to participate, then I’m ready to get involved, but I’m not naive either. I’m very well aware that we have to start riding in the next season, but I’ll repeat it again – we’ll be praised or scolded depending on how the first season has been crew. At the last Olympics in Beijing we had only one crew of four, unlike the previous times when there were two, but did anyone notice that?”
