Minister of State for Communication and Political Affairs in the Government of National Unity Walid Al-Lafi said that the Mediterranean Migration Forum will be held on July 17 in the capital, Tripoli, with the participation of heads of state and interior ministers.

Al-Lafi added during a press conference with Interior Minister Imad Trabelsi that the forum will be held for one day to come up with practical solutions to the immigration file.

Al-Lafi considered the forum to be a strategic vision in the immigration file in cooperation with European and African countries, according to him.

The forum will be attended by Italy, Malta, Niger, Chad, Spain, Greece, Czech Republic, Sudan, Algeria, Tunisia, and the Netherlands, in addition to the Arab League, the African Union, and the European Union.

Localization is rejected

For his part, Interior Minister Imed Trabelsi said that the immigration crisis has worsened in the country for 10 years and reached its peak this year.

According to Trabelsi, the number of irregular migrants in Libya has reached 2.5 million migrants, noting that Libya has transformed from a transit country to a country of stability.

During his speech, Al-Tarabulsi expressed his categorical rejection of the resettlement of immigrants, considering the issue a matter of national security in Libya.

Al-Tarabulsi stressed that the state will not take any action on the immigration file unless it is in Libya’s interest, calling on the “army forces” in the east to cooperate in securing the southern borders.

Al-Tarabulsi stated that the ministry will work on issuing official residency for workers in Libya in the next phase, considering that the time has come to solve the problem of immigrants.
