Ahead of the People Power Party’s July 23rd National Convention party representative election, which will be held from the 19th, the voter turnout by region is emerging as a variable. The party member electoral college (approximately 840,000 people) is not much different, with 40% in Yeongnam and 37% in the metropolitan area, but the party representative candidate camps have a common assessment that “the voter turnout in Yeongnam, the People Power Party’s support base, is higher than in the metropolitan area.” Each camp is also paying close attention to how the aftermath of the brawl between candidate supporters at the speech venue on the 15th will be reflected in the party sentiment.

An official from the camp of candidate Han Dong-hoon, who is currently ranked first in the opinion polls, predicted, “As sympathy votes are gathering due to the sight of supporters from the opposing party shouting ‘traitor’ at candidate Han and even throwing chairs at him, it seems likely that he will easily secure a majority in the first round of voting.” Candidate Han’s camp plans to, “Based on the support from Yeongnam confirmed in the opinion polls, we will maximize the voter turnout in the metropolitan area and among young party members to decide the outcome with a majority in the first round.” The idea is to increase the voter turnout in the metropolitan area and reduce the influence of the pro-Yoon (pro-Yoon Seok-yeol) camp’s Yeongnam organization votes. Candidate Han’s camp aims to conclude the election without a runoff by getting a voter turnout of 65% and a voter turnout of 60% in the first round. The voter turnout for the March 8th convention that elected Representative Kim Ki-hyun last year was 55.1%.

The Won Hee-ryong camp of the pro-Yoon faction said in relation to the brawl, “Isn’t this a reflection of party members’ concerns about candidate Han being a ‘traitor’?” and “The anti-debate against candidate Han will grow even stronger in the Yeongnam region.” Won’s camp plans to “increase the voter turnout in the Yeongnam region, where there is a sense of restraint toward candidate Han.” This is to exploit the Yeongnam region’s resentment toward candidate Han, who is proposing a third-party recommended ‘Special Prosecutor for Private First Class Chae’. Won’s camp said, “If the incumbent lawmakers and local government heads of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk (TK) and Gyeongnam regions take action, the results will be different from the opinion polls.”

The Na Kyung-won camp, which emphasizes ‘orthodox conservatism’, said, “The fact that Na Kyung-won is the right person to embrace division after the party convention will be persuasive.” Na’s camp is planning to expand its contact with party members nationwide during the remaining period and win votes. On the 6th, Na was the only candidate to hold a meeting with Gwangju City Party members. Na’s camp said, “The higher the voter turnout among party members who have supported the party for a long time regardless of region, the more advantageous it is for us.” Yoon Sang-hyun’s camp is planning to simultaneously target votes in Yeongnam and the metropolitan area based on his competitiveness in the metropolitan area, where he won five terms in Incheon.

The next leader of the People Power Party will be elected by reflecting 80% of the party member electoral college votes and 20% of the general public opinion poll. The party member electoral college vote will be conducted via mobile on the 19th and 20th, and via the automatic response system (ARS) on the 21st and 22nd, and a general public opinion poll will also be conducted on the 21st and 22nd.
