“Without the EU, Hungary would be a complete dictatorship”

WIIW director Mario Holzner does not believe that Russia will cut off the gas completely to the Europeans. And he also doesn’t believe that Austria’s eastern fantasy died with the war.

Die Presse: The gas supply from Russia is uncertain, but OMV has found a solution to bring Norwegian gas to Austria. How big is the risk of a gas stop?

Mario Holzner: Firstly, there are the transport rights that OMV has secured. All in all, that’s a little more than half of the amount we need each year. A third of that goes to the households that don’t want to cut off the gas. There aren’t any big savings either. So you have to hope for a mild winter and that people actually only heat up to 19 degrees. The question is whether that will be enough for the industry. It will be difficult.

So from the economist’s point of view, there is still no relaxation?
