The Attorney General of the Republic (FGR), presented at the Public Hearing of the case of Public Looting the statement of a witness of the diversion of funds committed by former officials during the management of Mauricio Funes.
The defendants in this case are: the ex-wife of Mauricio Funes and former First Lady of the Republic, Vanda Pignato, the former president of Cifco, Miguel Menéndez, known as “Mecafé”, the former Secretary of Communications, David Rivas; the former president of Banco Hipotecario, Manuel Rivera Castro. In addition, the former Chief of Accounting of the Presidency of the Republic, Rigoberto Palacios Panamanian; the financial manager of the Presidency, Francisco Rodríguez Arteaga; Funes’ father-in-law, Juan Carlos Verdugo.
“According to the investigations, when the defendants held public office, they diverted $351 million dollars from the State, for their own benefit,” said the FGR.
According to the fiscal accusation, the defendants created private accounts in the Mortgage Bank to divert the funds by means of checks, diverting $351 million dollars from the State.
