Vienna. Where should a 14 year old go? In Austria, young people decide at this age, together with their parents, which education or training path they will choose. It is especially challenging for newly immigrated parents to understand the complex Austrian school system and to choose between various vocational training alternatives. Many are unaware of opportunities and educational processes that differ from their own experiences. To assist families in the decision-making process, the City of Vienna and AK Wien launched the “Wohin mit 14?” It organizes multilingual information events called.
Deputy Mayor and City Councilor for Integration of the City of Vienna Christoph Wiederkehr, „It is of great importance to me that our young people receive the best possible education that meets their individual needs and interests. Thanks to the multilingual services of the Integration and Diversity Department, parents are supported in accompanying their children in their educational lives. ‘Where to go when you’re 14?’ The event series offers valuable guidance to parents to find the right education and training path with their children” with the words „Wohin mit 14?” emphasizes the importance of the event series.
Parents play a decisive role in shaping their children’s school career. The Integration and Diversity Department of the City of Vienna organizes information and further education programs for newly immigrated parents who are unfamiliar with the Austrian school system. In the series of events called „Wohin mit 14?“ (“Where to go at 14?”), education experts give presentations in different languages about vocational schools, high schools or apprenticeships. Parents get tips on choosing a school and learn about requirements for different educational pathways.
EC Vienna Education Director İlkim Erdost, „Viennese young people have many options for education and training at the age of 14. To provide an overview here, solid and supportive information is also needed for parents – ideally – in all the languages they and their children speak! “The more conscious decisions about education are made, the more likely dreams come true and the more school dropouts are prevented,” he says.
Better education – better job opportunities
Education in Austria has a significant impact on a person’s career. Research shows that people with only a compulsory school leaving qualification are much more affected by unemployment than people with higher levels of education. Educational level also has a large impact on earning opportunities over the course of a career – earning opportunities are significantly worse for those with only compulsory basic level education.
