An MDR contribution raises the question of whether Santa Claus is still in keeping with the times. The presenter is namely “traditionally an old, white man”.
It is said that a “gender-neutral designation” has long been discussed. Or even better: There would be discussions about whether a woman could take over the job.
For Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk, this “gender debate” about Santa Claus is “a serious issue”. Because: “In some circles, old, white men, especially when they are in decision-making positions, are the cause of a great many undesirable developments in society.”
“Do we maybe even need a Santa Claus?” Asks the MDR.
The feminist Luise Pusch has been trying for decades to “make the Christmas staff more feminine,” it continues.
Pusch himself has to laugh in the post, says: “For example, we could explain to the children: Santa Claus has to go on vacation, now his wife will come and help him for a while.”
Alternative solution: “Right from the start, they appear as dual leaders.” Or: One could also speak of “Christmas workers”, “as with caregivers”, Pusch thinks.
