Two suspected parcel thieves were arrested using a clever trick. A woman used a special device to track down her stolen shipments.
Police in Santa Barbara County, California (USA) have arrested two suspected package thieves using an Apple Airtag. A woman had sent herself a package after mail was repeatedly stolen from her mailbox. She hid one of the tracking devices in the package. This enabled the perpetrators to be located and arrested.
The suspects were found in a neighboring residential area. They were in possession of the stolen shipment containing the Airtag as well as other items allegedly stolen from more than a dozen other victims. The 27-year-old woman and her 37-year-old companion were arrested on various charges, including identity theft, credit card theft and conspiracy, and held on bail of $50,000 and $460,000, respectively.
In a statement, the police praised the woman’s actions and emphasized that she had acted in an exemplary manner by contacting the authorities immediately rather than taking action herself. The sheriff’s office also thanked the woman for her proactive approach and pointed out that such measures can help prevent future crimes and bring perpetrators to justice quickly. The police are continuing to work to inform all those affected and to identify additional victims.
