New Britain, Conn. – A 22-year-old woman testified she was asked to pose as an 11-year-old girl during a zoom call with state social services, a deception that unfolded while the girl’s remains were already hidden in a 40-gallon bin. The startling revelation came during a probable cause hearing for the girl’s mother and her boyfriend, who are accused in the child’s death.

A Chilling Deception Unveiled in Court

The case centers around the death of Jacqueline “Mimi” Torres-Garcia and the alleged attempts to conceal her fate from authorities.

  • Jacklyn Goulet testified she impersonated the 11-year-old during a Department of Children and Families (DCF) Zoom call in January 2025.
  • Goulet claimed the girl’s mother, Karla Garcia, requested the deception, allegedly fearing the loss of custody of her children.
  • Mimi’s remains were discovered in October, eight months after the Zoom call, in New Britain, Connecticut.

According to court testimony on Jan. 28, Jacklyn Goulet alleged that Karla Garcia asked her to pretend to be Jacqueline “Mimi” Torres-Garcia during a video conference with the DCF. Goulet stated she was unaware that Mimi was already deceased at the time. Garcia allegedly feared losing custody of her other children if DCF discovered Mimi was no longer alive.

Goulet testified that Garcia instructed her on what to say during the call, providing details about Mimi’s supposed life and well-being. The DCF was reportedly checking on Mimi’s welfare following concerns raised by school officials in Farmington, Connecticut, where the family previously resided.

The horrific details of Mimi’s death emerged after New Britain police discovered her remains on Oct. 8, in an abandoned building at 80 Clark St. Officers found a large container in the backyard containing what was believed to be human remains, wich were later confirmed to be those of the 11-year-old girl.

Investigators steadfast that Mimi likely died in the fall of 2024 while her family lived in Farmington. The family than allegedly transported her remains with them when they moved to New Britain in March 2025.

Authorities found Mimi’s body inside a plastic bag, wrapped in a comforter and sheets, within a laundry basket inside a 40-gallon bin, according to an affidavit. The medical examiner ruled her cause of death as fatal child abuse with starvation, classifying the manner of death as a homicide.

At the time of her death, Mimi weighed only 26 to 27 pounds. Investigators learned she had not been given food in the two weeks leading up to her death and was frequently restrained with zip ties, according to arrest and search warrants.

Karla Garcia and her boyfriend, Jonatan Nanita, are both charged with murder in connection with mimi’s death. Garcia’s aunt, Jackelyn Leeann Garcia, is also facing charges related to the girl’s abuse, though she has not been charged with murder.A judge will determine if there is sufficient probable cause to continue prosecuting Nanita after the completion of his hearing.

Tragically, Mimi was never reported missing.
