A clinic in Oregon, USA, stopped treating a woman with cancer because of her critical views about transgender.

The institution responsible for the treatment sent, on July 29, a message to the woman. At the time, she said the patient had been “discharged from medical care”.

Marlene Barbera, the character in this story, had her breast cancer treatment suspended by the Richmond Family Medicine Clinic. The institution had treated her for 12 years.

The story of the woman who was denied cancer treatment for being transgender critical

The patient revealed to the Reduxx website that she would have a mastectomy at the end of August, but, on July 29, she received an email from the Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU).

The message said the woman had been “discharged from medical care at the Richmond Family Medicine Clinic” — maintained by OHSU — “for disrespectful and offensive comments about our LGBT community and staff.”

The patient termination, effective immediately, included all OHSU family medicine clinics and immediate care services.

In 2022, Marlene messaged her doctor, through a tool that patients can access to obtain health information, and asked a question about the trans pride flag, placed at the clinic’s reception.

She found “the inclusion of political messages in a healthcare setting to be offensive”. But the doctor who cared for her for over ten years said the flag would not be removed.

Marlene reports that, in July of this year, a receptionist prevented her from sending the result of a blood test to the same doctor.

After being instructed to schedule an appointment and later claiming that she had breast cancer, the patient says that an attendant hung up the phone on her.

Weeks later, Marlene received an email informing her that she had left the clinic as a patient.

“I’ve had severe chronic depression since I was a teenager, and now I don’t have a general practitioner anymore,” he lamented, saying that what happened served to reinforce his views on gender. “I don’t approve of gender ideology.”

Clinic pronouncement

In a note sent to the newspaper People’s Gazettethe US institution reported that “patients, family members and university visitors have a responsibility to refrain from using discriminatory, profane, derogatory or threatening language, images or behavior, as they may result in the limitation of visiting privileges and affect access to care at the university”.
