In the world there are more than 55 million people with some type of dementia, of which more than 60% live in countries with a medium and low income level. The disease of Alzheimer It is the most common form of dementia and can account for up to 70% of cases. In Mexico, one million 300 thousand people suffer from it.

Why are there more cases in women?

It is known that this condition affects women more, directly and indirectly, since having a longer life expectancy increases the probability of suffering disability and dying as a result of this dementia. So too, Many women are responsible for 70% of the hours of care that people with Alzheimer’s receive. They are caregivers and/or family members whose personal, economic and social development is affected.

Given the disproportionate advance of this disease in the world, the World Health Organization (WHO) designated September 21 as the World Alzheimer’s Daya date on which organizations, institutions, governments and civil society come together to promote information, visibility and public policies on this priority issue.

According to data from the ADI (Alzheimer’s Disease International) World Alzheimer Report It is estimated that 75% of people with dementia are not diagnosed, and they believe that this rate can grow to 90% in low- and middle-income countries.

“The diagnosis is essential, but it is only the beginning of a long journey for both the patient and their families. Particularly, the economic costs can unbalance the family nucleus, or even fracture it,” details Alejandra García de León, Marketing Manager of Sun Pharma México.

The specialist adds that in addition to the impact on homes and formal and informal caregivers, it is also essential to recognize and support the work of health professionals. Doctors, nurses, technicians, each one represents a key bastion to combat, inform and treat this condition.

Some of the key points highlighted in the ADI Report are:

Understand the economic, social and emotional importance of the various types of dementia, as well as the challenges and decisions of each stage. Address the symptoms and changes associated with dementia, pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions that can help patients and their caregivers. Share perspectives and/or experiences about care models. The different types of dementia must become a priority issue in public health. Care should be offered that is person-centred, culturally appropriate and gender-inclusive and supported by robust care plans. Optimal patient care should be supported by a trained professional. Education about the different types of dementia needs to be improved and expanded to all sections of the population.
