Akshay Kumar’s wife Twinkle Khanna aka Mrs Funnybones, in her recent column ‘Why Ghosts Don’t Scare the Indian Stree’, has talked about why women in India are not scared of ghosts. Twinkle Khanna started by narrating ‘one of the apocryphal stories’ from her childhood, which was related to her grandmother’s tale. She then went on to list how horror films contain ‘less disturbing things than the scary things we see around us every day’. Twinkle mentioned the ‘rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata’, ‘sexual abuse of two four-year-olds in a school in Badlapur’ and other cases and explained how ‘Stree 2’ is a break from these incidents. She wrote, ‘It’s been fifty years on this planet, and I feel we are still teaching our daughters the same things I was taught as a child. Don’t go out alone. Don’t go to the park, to school, to work. Don’t go alone with any man, even if he is your uncle, cousin or friend, don’t go alone in the morning or evening, and definitely not at night because it is a case of when, not when ‘don’t go alone because you may never come back.’

Twinkle Khanna further wrote, ‘It’s time to ensure that laws are implemented and followed, guaranteeing safety measures for women in public places instead of confining us to home. Till then, I think it is safer for the women of this country to face a ghost in a dark alley than a man.’
Called ‘Stree 2’ a strong film
Twinkle wrote that horror films like ‘Stree 2’ can be a way to give an important social message in a world that is now turning into a completely scary world. She said that there is a lot of role reversal in the film. Her grandmother used to tell stories to her sister Rinke Khanna and her in childhood to ‘scare’ her so that she would not even go to the Juhu beach near their house.
