Women more educated than men, but not in Stem subjects

by time news

The growth of the level of education for women compared to men stops and, for the first time in years, the gender gap remains stable. According to ISTAT data of 2020, 65.1% of women have reached high school qualifications, men stop at 60.5%. Graduates are 23% compared to 17.2% of the male component, but the trend changes when it comes to Stem subjects: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. In 2020, 24.9% of graduates, between the ages of 25 and 34, have a degree in the scientific and technological subject areas. In these subjects 36.8% of men are graduates (more than one in three), while women are 17% (one in six). Differences also emerge on a territorial basis: more graduates in the north in Stem disciplines than in the center and south, but the trend is reversed with women. In Europe, the average population with a tertiary qualification in Stem disciplines is equal to 25.4%, according to 2018 data. The Italian percentage is very similar to that of the United Kingdom (23.2%) but lower than the French one ( 26.8%) and Spanish (27.5%). The average of women graduates in Stem subjects, however, in Italy is higher than that in other OECD member states and in other major European countries.
