New Delhi – In a significant move towards addressing gender imbalance in politics, the Law Minister Arjun Ram Maghwal tabled the Women Reservation Bill in the newly built Parliament building. The Bill seeks to provide 33% reservation for women in both the Parliament and Legislative Assembly.
The current representation of women in the Parliament is shockingly low, with only 82 out of the total 545 seats in the Lok Sabha being occupied by women, accounting for a mere 6.6%. Similarly, in the Rajya Sabha, out of the 238 seats, only 31 are held by women, making up just 7.6% of the total. Such statistics highlight the pressing need for a more gender-inclusive political landscape in the country.
