A committee of tribal chiefs has banned women from visiting tourist centers in Pakistan’s Bajor tribal district. They warned that if the government did not announce the matter within a day, tribal chiefs themselves would implement the decision, Pakistani newspaper Dawn reported. The local wing of the ruling party Jamiat-ul-Ulamaye Islam Fazl (JUIF) has warned that women will not be allowed to enter these tourist spots even if they are accompanied by their husbands or male relatives.

Adjacent to Afghanistan’s Kunar province, the Bajor tribal district is famous for its beautiful mountain ranges. There are many popular tourist destinations here.
Gabbar China, Bhai China, Munda Qila, Ragagan Dam and Aman Park are visited by many tourists including women and children from different parts of Pakistan. These tourist destinations are frequented by families during the holidays. It was here that women were completely banned.

The committee of tribal chiefs clarified that no woman should enter these tourist centers even if she is accompanied by her husband or relatives. The meeting also stated that it is against the values and traditions of Pakistan and Islam that women reach these tourist destinations. The decision was taken unilaterally by a jirga comprising senior members of various tribal groups, religious priests and JUIF leaders.
JUIF district president Maulana Abdur Rasheed said. JUIF, the leading party in the new coalition government, also asked the government to strictly implement this. JUIF leaders said that if there is no government order in this regard within a day, they will implement this order themselves.

Jirga members said that immoral and unethical things are being done here under the guise of tourism. Hundreds of women came here as tourists on the last Sacrifice Day. This is against the culture of the country. The committee of tribal chiefs also stated that this is not permissible according to Islamic laws. The meeting, which was attended by senior leaders of the ruling party and Chairman of Khar Tahsil Council, Haji Syed Badsha, also announced that strict intervention will be taken to prevent unethical activities.

The committee members said that women cannot be allowed to walk freely. In this context, a joint statement issued after the meeting stated that the decision was taken by a jirga comprising chiefs of various tribal groups. “We are not against tourism. It is necessary for the economic development of the region. The only thing we are against is women entering tourist resorts. It is against tradition, religious belief and customs. Unethical activities under the guise of tourism will not be allowed under any circumstances,” the statement said.

The meeting demanded that the government and the district administration should implement this decision the very next day. The meeting also stated that if the government does not issue the order, they will implement it at any cost.

Dawn newspaper reports that neither the government nor the district administration responded to this demand. Various human rights and women’s organizations have stated that this action is against the rights of women enshrined in the Constitution of Pakistan.
