A stunning second-half rally fell just short for the Omaha Women’s Basketball team on Saturday, as a last-second layup by Kansas City’s Emani Bennett sealed a 60-59 defeat for the Mavericks at Baxter Arena.
OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha Mavericks endured a gut-wrenching loss Saturday, succumbing to the Kansas City Roos 60-59 despite erasing an 18-point halftime deficit. The dramatic contest, a rematch of a similarly close New Year’s Eve encounter, showcased both the Mavericks’ resilience and the Roos’ ability to close out tight games.
Second-Half Surge Not Enough
Trailing 39-21 at the break, Omaha emerged from halftime with renewed vigor, igniting a 19-5 run that quickly shifted the momentum. The offensive explosion was largely fueled by the exceptional performance of freshman Regan Juenemann, who scored 22 of her game-high 27 points in the second half. Juenemann’s six 3-pointers on the day marked a new career high, and her shooting prowess proved pivotal in narrowing the gap.
“If we keep competing at that level,we’ll accomplish some things the rest of the way,” said head coach Jamie Carey, praising her team’s collective fight.
The Mavericks’ comeback gained further traction with a barrage of three-pointers, including four consecutive shots from beyond the arc – three courtesy of Juenemann and one from fellow freshman Elsa Vedral – within a mere two-minute span. this rapid-fire scoring spree transformed a 16-point deficit into a manageable 44-40 contest.
A Back-and-Forth Finish
Despite Kansas City maintaining a lead for much of the second half, Omaha persistently chipped away, eventually seizing a 53-52 advantage when Juenemann banked in a short jumper with 3:20 remaining. The Roos responded with two free throws to regain the lead, but Juenemann answered once more, sinking her fifth three-pointer of the half with just 8.6 seconds left to put Omaha ahead 59-58.
However, the elation was short-lived. Following a timeout, Kansas City’s Bennett drove to the basket and converted a game-winning layup with 4.3 seconds remaining.A last-ditch half-court attempt by Omaha bounced off the backboard as time expired, sealing the 60-59 defeat. This marks the second consecutive nail-biter lost to Kansas City, following a 61-59 loss on New Year’s Eve.
Juenemann Shines, Smith Dominates the Boards
Juenemann’s 27 points led all scorers, marking the third time this season the freshman has reached that plateau. beyond her scoring,Avril Smith delivered a standout performance, recording a career-high 11 points,a remarkable 17 rebounds, and four blocked shots. Smith, a freshman from Millard North, is currently ranked among the nation’s leaders in both rebounding and blocked shots, despite averaging just 2.5 points per game prior to Saturday’s contest.
