On the occasion of Women’s Day, the yes television company publishes data about the percentage of women involved in Israeli original productions, in the worlds of docu, drama, children and youth. The data shows that for the first time the number of female directors exceeded the number of male directors in all original productions broadcast on yes in 2022 with 62%. All the data refer to the original productions that were broadcast on yes’s screen in the past year and reveal a female predominance in the creation and representation in the series.

In the world of drama source productions, it was found that 75% of the series broadcast on yes were created by women, 87% were produced by women and 50% of the drama productions were directed by women. In the worlds of drama, there is usually more than one producer or creator, so in some cases it is a producer and a producer together or a creator and a creator together, but it is still a high percentage of women. It was also found that in 50% of the local drama productions in 2022, women are in the main roles and in 75% a woman is in one of the two main roles. In “Bloody Mori”, for example, Naomi Lavov and Rotem Sela star in the main roles, “Fire Dance” was created and directed by Rama Borstein Shay and one of the two main roles is played by the discovery Mia Evrin.

More in-

Even in the docu-reality world of yes there is a predominance of female directing with Sigal Shavit in “Bozgloss” and Orna Ben Dor who directed “Periphery Empire” where the leading participants of the series are successful entrepreneurs in the worlds of fashion and beauty.

In the world of yes’s original documentary productions, the place of women is especially prominent in recent years and they are used in all roles: from directors, creators and producers, to editors, photographers and recordists. Of all the original documentary productions broadcast this year on yes’s screen, 67% were produced by women and 60% were directed by women. Even on the screen itself, the women were prominently represented with us, for example: ‘To the End of the Body’ – a series about the obsessive preoccupation with the perfect body, which was made entirely by a female team, a documentary film about Rivka Michaeli, the ‘daughter of the artist’, winner of the Ophir Award, the director’s debut film A young woman dealing with her father’s alienating attitude and more.

In the world of original productions for children, 88% of the series broadcast on yes last year were produced by women, 55% were created by women and 44% were directed by women. It was also found that in 88% of children’s and youth productions the main character is a woman: Ella Lee Lahav in “Shumkom”, Omer Nodelman in “Infinity”, Liana Ayon and Mor Sarosi in “The Policeman’s Daughter”, Ravid Ronan in “Sky” and more.

A lot of criticism has been leveled over the years in Israel and around the world for the exclusion of older women from the screen. Also this year yes paid respect to mature women when, for the first time in Israel, a series was broadcast in which the two main characters are girls of the third age – ‘Who has heard of Chava and Nava?’ They are played by Hana Leslau and Karen Mor. In addition to being a series created and produced by women, it also deals with the Mi Tu phenomenon in the seventies. Also in the ‘The Dubbed’ series, one of the two main female characters is played by 64-year-old Idit Teperson, as well as the documentary film ‘Rebeka Michaeli: What’s Happening to Me Lately’ about the beloved 84-year-old actress.

“Women are without a doubt a central and powerful pillar in the Israeli creation of yes and we are proud to bring to the screen the exciting, funny and important stories that women took part in their creation,” said Keren Gleicher, yes’s VP of content. “I am sure that in the years to come we will continue to see creation Feminine and strong on and off the screen.”
