Seventeen years after co-organizing the Men’s Euro with Austria, Switzerland will once again host a major international football tournament. The UEFA executive committee meeting this Tuesday in Lisbon has, in fact, retained the Swiss candidacy for the award of the Women’s Euro 2025. The European body has favored the candidacy of Switzerland to the detriment of those of France. , which hosted the Women’s World Cup in 2019, Poland and an alliance of four Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden). It was this alliance that was finally defeated after three rounds of voting, by nine votes to four. In the first round, France received only one vote.

This Euro 2025 will be one of the biggest events ever organized in Switzerland, with Euro 2008 and the Football World Cup in 1954. Sixteen teams will qualify for the final phase with the aim of succeeding England , defending champion. The 31 matches will take place during the summer of 2025 (dates still to be determined) in eight cities: Geneva, Sion, Basel, Bern, Lucerne, Saint-Gall, Thun and Zurich.

Beaten by Germany (2-1) in the semi-finals in the previous edition in 2022 in England, France will try to win their first trophy in this competition. It will perhaps still be under the orders of new coach Hervé Renard, whose contract runs until 2024. Until then, the best European teams will participate in the World Cup this summer in Australia (July 20-August 20) then in the Olympic Games in Paris next year.
