Women’s Euro: England beat Spain en route to the semi-finals

by time news

England tonight (Wednesday) defeated Spain 1: 2 at the end of extra time and advanced to the semi-finals of the Euro for women. The three Lions team was already 1-0 behind, but two critical goals, including one in overtime in the 96th minute sent it to the next stage where it will meet Belgium or Sweden.

England, the host of the tournament and the favorite to win, enjoyed a huge winning goal from Georgia Stanway that bounced the fans in the stands. Earlier, Alan Ton equalized 1-1 in the 82nd minute and forced another half hour of intriguing football, which ended in a 10-straight win for the English (for the first time in their history). England have not lost yet under Serena Wigman (4: 100 goal balance).

Spain, who had to contend without its two stars Alexia Pottias and Jenny Hermoso, opened the game superbly and in the 54th minute scored when Esther Gonzalez found the net from a great cooking by Athena del Castillo. Sweden and Belgium will meet on Friday, and on the other side of the quarter-finals Germany will meet Austria and France the Netherlands.
