A third quarter to forget jeopardized Spain’s victory, but Miguel Méndez’s men recovered their best version in the final minutes to end up overwhelming Montenegro (78-57) and continue with all the qualifying options open, despite the defeat of the debut against Latvia.

The selection bet on three starting orangeswith Queralt Casas, Alba Torrens and Raquel Carrera, who formed the quintet together with Maite Cazorla and Laura Gil.

Montenegro surprised at the start with a 0-4 run through Mujovic and Jovanovic, but the talent and experience of Alba Torrens allowed her nerves not to appear and, with two triples, the Mallorcan put Spain ahead (8-6).

The subsequent exchange of baskets still allowed Montenegro to recover a minimal advantage, but the final partial of 6-2 with Carrera, Conde and Ouviña, allowed to close the first quarter 19-14.

The superiority in the rebound was beginning to be evident, but the game did not begin to break up until a second period in which Ouviña began assuming the scoring responsibility with two triples and eight consecutive points to put the 29-20. A recital of the taronja that was joined by a stellar María Conde, who arrived at the break with 15 points and being a constant threat both reaching the basket and in the outside shot. However, it was Quetralt Casas, also from the line of 6.75, who closed the first part with a comfortable 42-29.

The spectacular 8 of 12 in triples (67%) seemed to be on track for victory after a first part in which the Spanish did not go even once to the free throw line. But there was still a long game ahead and it didn’t take long for Méndez’s men to put their feet back on the ground, with a unexpected partial of 0-11 that put Montenegro to only two points (42-40)against a Spain that was not capable of scoring or stopping the bleeding against a rival that became strong defending in the zone.

Alba Torrens to the rescue

Y again in a delicate situation, Alba Torrens appeared to score after almost five minutes without scoring and forcing a timeout for the rival after his third triple of the game, which made it 47-42.

The Spanish women caught oxygen, but an inspired Lekovic, with three actions in a row and a triple from Jovanovic once again brought fear to Méndez’swho closed the third quarter with a tight 52-21, despite five points in a row from Leo Rodríguez, and losing the rebound battle.
