The emotional elevator finally stopped at the right floor. In Sweden, Paris FC won on penalties against Arsenal in the final of the first preliminary round of the Women’s Champions League (3-3, 4-2 tab). The Parisiennes, 3rd in D1 Arkema last season, will see the second round, the last stage before the group stage, while the horizon seemed particularly obstructed when they inherited the semi-finalists of the last edition of the competition.

The heroine of the day is called Chiamaka Nnadozie. The Parisian goalkeeper stopped two shots on goal, the last two attempted by the Londoners, while Daphne Corboz missed her attempt for the PFC. Victorious against the Ukrainian FC Kryvbas in the semi-final of the first preliminary round (4-0), Gaëtane Thiney and her teammates hit much harder this time. Still deprived of its stars Beth Mead and Vivianne Miedema, Arsenal still had several big names, like Stina Blackstenius, who reached the semi-finals of the World Cup with Sweden.

The feat took shape in a minute. In the 55th, Mathilde Bourdieu took advantage of a vicious cross which ricocheted off the Gunners’ post, surprising Manuela Zinsberger. The leather was redirected in her direction and the attacker concluded at close range. She had barely finished celebrating the opening score when she was already launched towards goal by Julie Dufour (56th). Bourdieu slipped the ball under the goalkeeper to give the Parisians a two-goal lead and a lot of hope.

The drop in temperature was terrible 40 minutes later when Jen Beattie equalized in added time. Meanwhile, Alessia Russo had closed the gap to revive Arsenal. Julie Soyer then put her teammates back on the path to qualification (106th), but, once again, the Gunners were able to score in the money-time through Russo. Not enough to overcome Parisiennes who continue on their way to the Champions League.
