“I won’t leave any regrets.”

South Korea’s leading female handball player, Eun-hee Ryu (Hungary), is stepping onto the stage of the 2024 Paris Olympics with the determination that it will be her ‘last’ time. She pledged, “I will do my best to play a role in contributing to the team every moment I play on the court.”

Eun-hee Ryu is a representative Korean women’s handball player.

He has been selected for the national team consistently since the 2012 London Games, and last month, his team, Hungary’s Gyori, won the 2023-2024 EHF Champions League, becoming the first Korean player to win the European Champions League.

Ryu Eun-hee revealed her aspirations ahead of her trip to Paris through the Korea Handball Federation, saying, “I have achieved the career I have dreamed of since I was young as a player in Europe and won the Champions League,” and “Now, I want to win an Olympic medal and leave my name in handball history.”

He had a hard time due to the lack of rest time during the preparation for the Olympics, including playing in the Champions League until early last month, but he strengthened his teamwork by completing training in Europe with his juniors. “(I’m careful) because they call me an ‘old fart’ whenever I talk to them,” he said with a smile, adding, “When my juniors ask me questions (about my characteristics as a player), I answer them well.”
Women’s handball is the only ball sport in which the Korean team is participating in the upcoming Paris Olympics. Naturally, it is receiving more attention than before.

Ryu Eun-hee emphasized, “The Olympics is a stage where the world’s best athletes gather. Every moment will be tense, but I will show what I have prepared without regret.”

Korea was placed in Group A for the Olympics with Norway, Germany, Slovenia, Sweden, and Denmark. Denmark is a three-time Olympic champion, and Norway is also a strong team that has won the Olympics twice.

Ryu Eun-hee analyzed, “Germany has many good shooters, including Emily Wolck, so it seems like a big task. Denmark has goalkeeper Sandra Toft and players with good strength and power, which are threatening.” She continued, “Norway has all the players who are good, but we have to watch out for the goalkeeper and Stein Oftedal. And Slovenia has Anna Gross in great form, so we have to be careful.”
The Korean women’s handball team won a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Games and came in fourth at the 2012 London Games. After suffering a bitter defeat in the group stage at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, they only made it to the quarterfinals at the 2020 Tokyo Games.

In Paris, she is once again pledging to promote women’s handball. Ryu Eun-hee said, “Handball is an unpopular sport, but if many people show interest and support, it will be a great help. I will do my best with the support of the people,” and “I will think of it as my last Olympics and play a game without regrets for myself,” showing her strong determination.
