Chennai: The Chennai Open WTA 250 women’s tennis tournament will be held for the first time in September at the Nungambakkam Tennis Ground in Chennai. Tennis is now a lively sport in Chennai. The world has been affected by the corona epidemic for almost two years. Thus sports and athletes especially tennis players were severely affected. Tennis is booming again in Tamil Nadu after a five-year recession.
Vijay Amirtaraj, a renowned Indian sports legend who recently won the Gold Record Award from the International Tennis Federation (IDF) and the International Hall of Fame in London for being a player motivator and philanthropist and for his outstanding contribution to the game of tennis, is currently the President of the Tamil Nadu Tennis Association (TNTA). In his introductory remarks, he said, “There is no doubt that the ATP event had a huge impact on the game of tennis in Tamil Nadu and our country.
Not only the best players of the world came to Chennai but also our own players Vander Pius Maheshbhoopathy, Somdev and Ramkumar made the most of this rare opportunity held locally to go to the world stage. When I was the President of the Tamil Nadu Tennis Association (TNDA) in 2018, it was not only the desire of the Association but also of my personal desire to hold a major event again in my hometown of Chennai. Thus players, managers and coaches.
Such a trend encourages everyone as the younger generation to continue playing tennis to promote and improve the game in the state. It will not only ensure the dominance of both men and women in the game of tennis but will also help transform Tamil Nadu into an international destination for tourism investment and industry. Chennai is also a major city internationally. The Govt epidemic greatly affected the functioning of the game of tennis. But with the blessings of Chief Minister Mr. MK Stalin, the Government of Tamil Nadu’s strong support for perseverance and sports,
Vijaya Amitaraj said, “I am proud to announce that this will be the first time that the ‘Chennai Open WTA 250 International Women’s Tennis Championship 2022’ will be held from September 12 to 18 at the well-built STAD Tennis Stadium in Nungambakkam, Chennai. I must commend the efforts of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) and ABG Consulting to hold this tournament in Chennai. Chennai now has the opportunity to host the WTA 250 event in India for the first time since the WTA restructured in 2008.
All players participating in the event are expected to be in the top 100 in the world tennis rankings. The Government of Tamil Nadu’s strong support for the holding of the Chess Olympiad in Chennai and the promotion of the idea of setting up a giant sports city shows the Government’s commitment to the sport. We are greatly indebted to the supportive energy and enthusiasm of the Hon’ble Minister and Secretary of the Department who oversees the Department of Sports and Youth Development.

Women’s tennis will be promoted in the state in line with the men’s tennis tournament.
