The Korean national under-20 (U-20) women’s soccer team departed for the ‘2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup’ to be held in Colombia next month.
According to the Korea Football Association, the women’s U-20 national soccer team led by coach Park Yoon-jung departed for Bogota, Colombia via Incheon International Airport on the morning of the 19th.
Korea, which is in Group D of the ‘2024 U-20 Colombia Women’s World Cup’ group stage, will face Nigeria (September 2nd at 8 AM), Venezuela (September 5th at 10 AM), and Germany (September 8th at 5 AM) in that order.
In this competition, 16 countries will advance to the tournament, including the 1st and 2nd place teams from each group and the 4 best 3rd place teams from each group.
The best result in the competition was 3rd place in the 2010 Germany competition, where Ji So-yeon (Suwon FC), Lee Min-a, and Kim Hye-ri (both from Incheon Hyundai Steel) were active.
In the most recent tournament held in Costa Rica in 2022, they were eliminated in the group stage with 1 win and 2 losses.
South Korea will be looking to qualify for the tournament, something they haven’t done since reaching the quarterfinals in Canada in 2014.
Korea finished fourth in the 2024 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-20 Asian Cup held in Uzbekistan in March, earning a ticket to the U-20 World Cup for the seventh time.
This national team includes 13 members who participated in the ‘2024 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-20 Women’s Asian Cup’ held in March, including captain Jeon Yu-kyung (Wideok University) and Bae Ye-bin (Wideok University), who participated in the Women’s World Cup last year.
The roster of 21 players has been completed with the addition of eight new players who stood out during domestic training camps and away games in the United States.
While college players born in 2004 and 2005 form the core, three high school players born in 2006 were also selected. The only player from overseas is defender Jang Seo-yoon from Yale University in the United States.
The national team held training camps in Gumi, Gyeongsangbuk-do from the 12th to the 17th to strengthen their organization before leaving for Colombia, the land of the decisive battle.
