120 minutes of match, then a breathless and endless penalty shootout: the suspense lasted a long time this Saturday between France and Australia, but the match did not ultimately turn out in favor of Les Bleues. A cruel end, attended by nearly 5.7 million viewers, this Saturday at 9 a.m. (French time).

The figures, published by Médiamétrie, represent the best audience achieved by a meeting of Les Bleues during this World Cup. It was on the antennas of France 2. The very disputed meeting, which ended in the defeat of the French after an interminable session of shots on goal (0-0, 7 tab to 6), achieved 69 .6% audience share (PDA), or nearly seven out of ten viewers.

Still far from the audiences of the French men’s team matches

Their previous matches had respectively been watched by 3.4 million (France – Jamaica on M6 on July 23), 4.3 million (France-Brazil on France 2 on July 29), 3.9 million (Panama – France on France 2 on August 2) and 5.2 million viewers (France-Morocco on M6 on August 8).

The audience record for the French women’s football team dates back to June 2019, during the World Cup in France, with nearly 12 million viewers (TF1 and Canal +) for the victorious round of 16 against Brazil. Even if the comparison must remain measured because of the schedule of the matches of the Blue ones in the antipodes, these hearings remain however largely lower than those carried out by the men’s team of France. By way of comparison, his victorious quarter-final against England (2-1) at the 2022 World Cup was watched by 17.7 million viewers on December 10 in the evening.

The success of the France team’s matches is however satisfactory for the two co-broadcasters, while the threat of a black screen has long weighed on the 2023 edition of the Women’s World Cup, organized in Australia and New -Zealand. Because of the time difference, the television channels were not reassured as to the economic fallout linked to the audiences and the advertisements, and were slow to take out the checkbook. Following a vast agreement announced in mid-June by Fifa concerning around thirty countries, France Télévisions and M6 had acquired the rights to the event, allowing it to be broadcast unencrypted in France.
