The candidates for the People Power Party’s July 23rd National Convention clashed head-on over the “intentional defeat in the general election” at their second joint speech on the 10th. Candidate Won Hee-ryong raised suspicions of proportional representation nomination bias against candidate Han Dong-hoon, and also raised suspicions of intentional defeat in the general election in relation to the “ignoring of Ms. Kim Gun-hee’s Telegram messages.” Candidate Han responded by saying, “It’s old-fashioned politics like multiple personalities,” and the negative warfare is intensifying.
Each candidate camp is paying keen attention to the impact of the controversy over ignoring text messages on the Yeongnam party, which accounts for 40% of the electoral college. In Daegu and Gyeongbuk (TK), the atmosphere is that “one candidate is definitely starting to take responsibility for the general election,” but in Busan and Gyeongnam (PK), there is a sense that “the pro-Yoon (pro-Yoon Seok-yeol) faction will face a backlash.”

Candidate Won, who ran as the first runner, met with reporters after the joint speech of Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam at the People Power Party convention held in Haeundae-gu, Busan on this day and, regarding the controversy over ignoring text messages, he said, “Even if everyone around them is against it, if the First Lady said such a thing to the head of the ruling party, isn’t that a ray of light, a last hope to persuade the President through communication?” and “In a situation where victory in the general election is so desperate that even something out of nothing has to be created, isn’t it possible that they intentionally tried to lead the general election to defeat?” On Channel A’s “Political Signal” that morning, he said, “During the discussion on proportional representation nominations, the Blue House was excluded, and about five people, including candidate Han, discussed it in a closed room,” and said that candidate Han’s Sacheon suspicions should be included in the general election white paper.
One candidate met with reporters right after the speech and said about the “intentional defeat in the general election” theory that Won had raised, “Yesterday (during the broadcast debate), you said you would not do negative campaigns because you were afraid of the National Election Commission, but you changed your stance and are happily doing matadors since this morning.” He continued, “This kind of old-fashioned politics with multiple personalities must be liquidated.” Regarding the Sacheon suspicions raised by Won, he said, “After saying that my family intervened in the nomination, he has been running away.” He also sarcastically said, “Is the way you always throw dirt and run away the way Won talked about political experience? I don’t want to learn that kind of thing.” He added, “Spreading false information is a serious crime.”
Candidate Na Kyung-won criticized both candidates Han and Won. Candidate Na said, “The fight between Candidate Han and Candidate Won is too rough and is showing the typical old ways.” She continued, “It seems that all the disgraceful behaviors that can be seen in the previous party, such as lining up and standing in line, have occurred. Let’s quickly cut ties with those who have joined hands with old politics.” Candidate Yoon Sang-hyun pointed out, “The rotten culture of lining up party members and engaging in factional politics for selfishness and greed is already deeply rooted (in the party).”

In the Yeongnam region, which has the largest number of voters (approximately 840,000) at 40.3%, the controversy over Mrs. Kim’s text messages is also considered the biggest issue. The next party leader is elected by reflecting 80% of the party member votes and 20% of the general public opinion poll. A first-term TK lawmaker said, “The controversy over text messages has made people realize that ‘Candidate Han is really not on good terms with the president,’” and “Calls for Candidate Han to take responsibility for the general election are starting to be raised.” On the other hand, a PK lawmaker said, “There is criticism that the pro-Yoon side planned the controversy over text messages and other tactics to hold the convention,” and “It seems like there is a backlash against the pro-Yoon side.”
A poll has been released showing that more than half of the People Power Party supporters support one candidate. According to a survey of 2,003 men and women aged 18 or older nationwide conducted by Embrain Public on the 7th and 8th at the request of YTN, 1,074 people classified as People Power Party supporters or non-partisans were surveyed on the suitability of the party leader.
