“The essence is whether you have fulfilled your responsibilities as the vice chairman… You have to answer the essence and then look into the rest.”

Won Hee-ryong, People Power Party representative candidate, refuted candidate Han Dong-hoon’s claim on the 6th that the disclosure of the ‘apology for luxury bags’ text messages exchanged between him and Kim Gun-hee was ‘intervention in the party convention and party affairs,’ saying, “The essence is that they threw it together without discussion within the party or with the Blue House.”

Candidate Won met with reporters after attending a town hall meeting hosted by the Extra-Parliamentary Party Coordinators’ Council and the First Pastoral Meeting, Reflection and Resolution at the National Assembly Members’ Hall that afternoon, and answered questions about the matter. He said, “I would rather question what the basis is for the announcement that it was done intentionally to intervene (in the national convention).”

He said, “The essence of this incident was that there was a public clash over the First Lady’s bag, which was the most sensitive issue during the general election,” and “The First Lady said she would follow the decision, whether it was an apology or more measures, but they just squashed it without discussing it within the party or with the Blue House or giving a response.”

He continued, “I don’t know if it has nothing to do with the election, but this is a huge burden on the many candidates, losers, supporters, the president, and the ruling party.”

He said, “For example, if a file was released and the content itself is true, rather than the question of who released it, the more fundamental question is whether the vice-chairman in charge of the election fulfilled his responsibility at that time.”

He said, “We need to answer the essential questions and discuss the rest,” and added, “We need to watch because it seems like we won’t get a straightforward and faithful answer to the realistic issues. There are only 6 TV debates left. Can we just skip over them without answering?”

Candidate Won criticized the candidate’s side for refuting the claim that Ms. Kim’s text message was intended to indicate that she could not apologize, saying, “They keep bringing it up as an issue of deciphering the Korean language.”

He asked, “I am so sorry for putting this burden on the party, and I will do more than just apologize. It is clearly written that I will follow the decision of the vice chairman, and I intend to accept the punishment, so where does it say that I will not do it?”

He continued, “If we ask the people who left the same text message, I think the people will be able to use their common sense to decide whether they will take action beyond an apology or whether they are sending the text message as an alibi when they don’t want to do it.”

Candidate Won responded to the question, “Candidate Na Kyung-won said that candidate Han’s actions were the relevant actions,” by saying, “I used the same expression, but the relevant actions are written in the party constitution and rules,” and “Since the ethics committee has the authority, they will review it and reach a conclusion.”

Then, in response to the question, “Do you think the ethics committee should review it?” he said, “If you formally file a complaint, you have to go through the process of either returning it or reviewing it, saying that it is not the relevant act.” However, in response to the question, “Will the candidate officially accept it?” he said, “There are no plans to do so yet.”

Regarding the point that “Ms. Kim could have apologized even if former lawmaker Yoo Seung-min had not taken a candidate’s position,” he said, “Isn’t that asking for permission?” and “The party needs to sufficiently deliberate on the issue of what and at what level the apology should be, and how the party will deal with the expected opposition party counterattack afterward, both at the level of election strategy and party-government consultation.” He also criticized, “We need to relearn politics from the basics.”

Candidate Won responded to the fact that candidate Han Dong-hoon’s camp reported the text message he sent to a party member to the party’s election management committee as “black propaganda,” saying, “At first, they even stated their position by saying it was a trolling, but then withdrew it because there was no problem.” He also asked, “They should also withdraw their claim of black propaganda. What is black propaganda?”
