Korea failed to advance to the quarterfinals of the Ing Cup, an international Go tournament, for the first time in 36 years.

According to the Korea Baduk Association on the 4th, Won Seong-jin, 9-dan, the last player on the Korean team, lost to China’s Xie Ke, 9-dan, in the quarterfinals of the 10th Ing Cup World Professional Go Championship held in Shanghai, China, after 276 moves. As a result, all five Korean players were eliminated. This is the first time that Korea, which has won the Ing Cup six times since its inception in 1988, has failed to advance to the semifinals.

The Ing Cup is an international Go competition founded by Taiwanese entrepreneur Ying Chang-chi (1914-1997). Held every four years, it is also called the “Go Olympics.” In the round of 16 held the day before, the Korean team lost to Shin Jin-seo, 9th Dan, who was a strong contender for the championship, as well as Park Jeong-hwan, 9th Dan, Shin Min-jun, and Kim Jin-hwi, 7th Dan.

On this day, Won Seong-jin, who was at a disadvantage in the upper-side battle, tried to turn things around in the lower-side fight, but failed to break through the defense of China’s She Ke 9-dan. Following She Ke 9-dan, China’s Ke Jie 9-dan also advanced to the semifinals. Taiwan’s Xu Hao-hong, the gold medalist at the Hangzhou Asian Games last year, defeated China’s Li Qin-cheng 9-dan in the quarterfinals. Xu Hao-hong is the first Taiwanese player to advance to the semifinals in the Ying Cup. Japan’s Ichiriki Ryo 9-dan also defeated China’s Xu Jia-yang 9-dan to advance to the semifinals.

The semifinals, which will be held in three rounds, will be moved to Ningbo, China and held on the 6th. The prize money for the winner of the Ying Cup is 400,000 dollars (approximately 550 million won), and the prize money for the runner-up is 100,000 dollars.
